Frequently asked questions
Transactions
Can I add a transaction by voice?
Yes, on any plan, on iOS 26 or later. Turn on Enable voice input in Settings > App > Configuration > Transactions, then tap the microphone button next to + on Transactions and say something like “Food, 20 dollars”. Speech is recognized on your device, and the transaction form opens filled in so you can check it before saving.
Can transactions be added automatically?
Yes, with Pro, on iPhone. Settings > App > Configuration > Transactions > Automation walks you through setting up a Shortcuts automation. With Apple Pay, an in-store contactless payment is added as an expense as soon as you pay. On iOS 27 or later, the Bank notifications automation reads your bank app’s notifications instead, so online payments, transfers, and income are added too. The category is picked from your past transactions at the same merchant.
Which currency is used for a transaction?
Income and expenses use the selected account’s currency. To enter an amount in another currency, tap the currency on the amount keypad: it switches between the account’s currency and your favorite currencies, the ones you star in any currency list. The account balance is then updated with cached exchange rates. In a transfer, each side uses its own account’s currency, and the app fills in the destination amount from cached exchange rates.
Can I customize the Transactions screen?
Yes. Open the ellipsis menu on Transactions and choose Screen options to show or hide summary totals, account names, and notes, and to choose where the + button sits.
Accounts
How do I create and organize accounts?
Tap the account name in the header on Transactions or Insights to open your accounts. The ellipsis menu there adds a New account and, when you came from Transactions, lets you Reorder accounts. Touch and hold an account to edit it, adjust its balance, or export its transactions.
When should I adjust a balance?
When the balance in the app no longer matches the real one, for example after fees you didn’t record, or when you want to start fresh. Adjust balance sets the new balance with an adjustment record, so the difference isn’t counted as income or spending. On investment accounts the same action is called Update asset value.
Categories
Why do some categories appear above the keypad?
They’re your three most-used expense categories for the period selected on Transactions, shown when you add a new expense so you can pick one with a single tap. To hide them, turn off Show top categories in Settings > App > Configuration > Transactions.
What happens if I delete a category?
Deleting a parent category also deletes its subcategories. If transactions use a category you are deleting, the app first asks you to pick another category of the same type and moves those transactions there.
Budgeting
Where do I find budgets and goals?
Tap the gauge button in the Insights header, or the Budgets tab if Investment tracking is off. The floating button in the corner switches between Budgets and Goals.
How do budgets calculate spending?
A budget adds up your expenses in its period (a week starting on Monday, a month, or a year) and compares the total with its limit. Amounts in other currencies are converted to the budget’s currency with cached exchange rates. Income, including refunds recorded as income, and transfers don’t count. A budget can cover all accounts and categories or only the ones you choose, and a category includes its subcategories.
What is detailed budget tracking?
It lets a budget split its limit between categories, by percentage or by fixed amount, so its card shows each category against its own share. The split has to add up to the whole limit, and only the categories in it count toward the budget. Turn it on with Detailed budget tracking in Settings > App > Configuration > Insights.
How do goals calculate progress?
A goal adds up the current balances of the accounts you choose, converted to the goal’s currency with cached exchange rates, and compares the total with its target amount. If you don’t choose any accounts, it counts every account that isn’t archived.
What do the budget and goal statuses mean?
A budget is On track while spending is light for the time that has passed, Keeping pace while the limit can still last the period, and Overspending when the share of the limit you’ve spent is more than 15 percentage points ahead of the share of the period that has passed. Over budget means the limit is exceeded, and Within budget means a finished period stayed under it. A goal is Reached once its accounts hold the target amount. With a target date, it’s Behind when it’s more than 5 percentage points short of a steady saving pace from the day you created it, On track otherwise, and Overdue once the date has passed. Without a date, it stays In progress.
Insights
What does the monthly spending comparison show?
With Expense and This month selected, Insights compares this month’s spending with a usual month: the average of up to your last six full months, and it needs at least two. All expenses and each category are compared with their own average, and a red arrow marks any that are at least 5 percent over. Open a row’s transactions to see what you spent this month next to the monthly average.
What is Yearly net balance?
It’s a yearly summary of income minus expenses: how much of your income you kept, or how much more you spent than you earned, with a monthly chart of income and expenses and a list of months. Open it with the Yearly net balance button in the Insights header and switch years with the tabs. Transfers, balance adjustments, investment accounts, and archived accounts aren’t counted.
What are Forecast and Safe to spend?
Forecast projects your balance over the next 30 days from the recurring income and bills it detects and your usual everyday spending. Safe to spend is today’s balance minus the bills due in those 30 days and a typical month of everyday spending; future income isn’t counted. Forecast is part of Pro. Open it with the forecast button in the Insights header while All accounts is selected.
Why is a bill or income missing from Forecast?
Forecast treats a payment as recurring only after at least two payments of a similar amount, in the same category and account, at a regular weekly, fortnightly, or monthly rhythm within the last 180 days. It only looks at the accounts included with the wallet button, never treats an expense without a category as a bill, and ignores transfers. A recurring payment drops out once it’s well overdue, and single payments can’t be added by hand.
Why are investment accounts not in Insights?
Insights covers everyday income and spending, so it only includes regular accounts. Investment performance is shown on the Investments tab.
Investments
How do I choose an investment cost basis type?
Pick the option that matches what you know. Start empty is for a new account you’ll fund with transfers: its cost basis is the money you transfer in. Average purchase price is for when you know each ticker’s average price: the cost basis is quantity times that price. Holding start date is for when you know when you started holding a ticker but not what you paid: the app estimates the cost from historical prices (REITs accounts don’t offer it). Total invested amount takes one opening amount with its Purchase date, or, with Use account transfers as cost basis on, calculates it from net transfers.
How do I buy or sell stock and crypto tickers?
To buy, make a transfer into the Stocks & Funds, REITs, or Crypto account and add the quantities of the tickers you bought. To sell, make a transfer from that account to a regular account and add the quantities you sold. The amount and the quantities are saved together, so your holdings stay in sync.
What does the price per unit do when I buy or sell tickers?
It records what each unit cost, without changing the transfer amounts: always enter what actually reached or left the investment account, fees included, because the cost basis uses that amount. Once every ticker has a price, the transfer shows the units’ total value and the fees and taxes, the gap between that value and the amount. When one transfer buys several tickers, the prices also split the amount between them, so each holding shows what you invested in it.
How do I track a fund or coin that ticker search cannot find?
Add it as a custom ticker. When adding a ticker to a Stocks & Funds, REITs, or Crypto account, tap Symbol, then Add custom ticker, and enter a name, an optional symbol, and the currency of its price. A custom ticker has no market price, so you enter prices yourself: open the account in Investments, tap the ticker, then tap the price tag button whenever the price changes. Value, gain/loss, and charts use the latest price known for each day.
How do I swap one asset for another?
Open the Stocks & Funds, REITs, or Crypto account in Investments, tap the +/− button, and enter how many units of each asset you gained or lost, using the +/− key for units taken away. You can add a ticker the account doesn’t hold yet. Swapping USDT for BTC is one operation with two lines, and the account’s cash balance isn’t touched.
How do I track bonds?
Create an investment account of the Government Bonds or Corporate Bonds type. Under Opening assets, tap Add bond for each purchase you already hold and enter its terms: face value, purchase price, quantity, coupon, Payments per year, and maturity date. If your bank or broker withholds tax, enter it in Tax withheld so payments and income show what you actually receive. When your device’s region is Ukraine, the wand button fills in the terms from the National Bank of Ukraine’s list. By default, bonds are valued from their terms; to use your broker’s prices instead, set the account’s Valuation to Market price and enter prices with the price tag button. To buy more later, make a transfer into the account and tap Add bond.
How do I record bond coupons and repayments?
Open the bond account in Investments and go to the Upcoming payments tab, where payments that are due are listed first. Tap Record, check the prefilled transaction, and save: a coupon is saved as income tagged to the bond account, and a redemption as a transfer out of it. You can also add a coupon yourself as income and tag the bond account in the Investment account row. To sell bonds, make a transfer from the bond account and choose the bond and quantity.
How do I track bank deposits?
Create an investment account of the Deposits type; one account can hold several deposits. Under Opening assets, tap Add deposit for each deposit you already have and enter its amount, opening date, term, interest rate, how often interest is paid, whether it’s added to the deposit, and Tax withheld. The app calculates the interest from these terms. Interest that’s paid out appears on the Upcoming payments tab when it’s due; tap Record to save it, and when the deposit ends, Record also fills in the transfer that returns the money. To open or top up a deposit later, make a transfer into the account; to close one early, make a transfer out of it.
How do I track REITs?
Create a REITs account: it holds tickers, like Stocks & Funds. Listed REITs get market prices; for a fund that isn’t listed, add a custom ticker and enter its price yourself. Buy and sell with transfers. Record each dividend as income on the account that received it and tag the REITs account in the Investment account row, and it appears on the account’s Dividends tab. If the fund reinvests a dividend, tap Reinvest dividend on that tab and add the units it bought.
How do I track real estate?
Create an investment account of the Real Estate type with what you paid as its Invested amount and its Purchase date. A property has no market price, so update its value yourself with the +/− button whenever you have a new estimate. Record rent as income on the account that received it and tag the property in the Investment account row, and add running costs such as property tax, insurance, or repairs with Add expense on the Expenses tab. Renovations are a transfer into the account, and a sale is a transfer out.
Why did my bond or REITs account become an Other account?
Government Bonds, Corporate Bonds, and REITs accounts now hold individual bonds or tickers instead of a single balance. An older account of these types that had only a balance was switched to Other, so it keeps its value, history, and tagged income. To use bond schedules or ticker prices, create a new account of that type and add your bonds or tickers.
How do I track dividends or rental income?
Add the income as a normal transaction on the account that received it, then tag the investment account it came from in the Investment account row. It then shows on that account in Investments: under Dividends for REITs, Coupons for bonds, Interest for deposits, and Income for real estate and other assets. Stocks & Funds and Crypto accounts can’t be tagged.
What is the difference between paid-out and retained investment income?
Paid-out income arrives as cash in a regular account: record it there as income and tag the investment account it came from. Retained income stays inside an Other account: record it with that investment account selected, and it raises the account’s value and gain without adding to its cost basis. A REITs dividend that buys more units goes through Reinvest dividend instead.
What does investment currency change?
It’s the currency of the totals and charts on the Investments tab and the starting currency for new investment accounts. Set it in Settings > Finances > Investment currency; until you do, it’s US dollars (USD).
Why are some investment prices unavailable?
This happens when a ticker’s current price can’t be loaded, or there’s no exchange rate to convert it. The Investments tab then shows Some prices unavailable and leaves that holding out of the value and gain/loss, while everything else is valued as usual. When a ticker’s price history can’t be loaded, the chart shows a note instead.
What does Invested this year show?
How much money you’ve moved into investments so far this year, and what share of your income that is. It counts transfers from regular accounts into investment accounts, plus bonds and deposits entered under Opening assets with a purchase date; money taken back out, moves between investment accounts, and trades aren’t counted. Income an investment account keeps, such as a reinvested dividend, counts as both money invested and income. Tap the card on the Investments tab for a breakdown by month and by account.
How do I disable investment tracking?
Turn off Investment tracking in Settings > App > Configuration > Investments. The Investments tab is replaced by Budgets, and investment options disappear from account and transaction forms. You can turn it back on at any time.
App Settings
What does main currency change?
It’s used for totals and summaries across accounts, and it’s the starting currency for new regular accounts, budgets, and goals. Changing it later doesn’t convert existing accounts, budgets, or goals: each keeps its own currency.
How do archived items work?
Archived accounts and categories keep their history but can’t be picked for new transactions. With Show archived items on in Settings > App > Configuration > Common, they stay in lists as greyed-out rows; turn it off to hide them.
Can I add widgets to the Home Screen?
Yes, on any plan: This Month, Quick Add, Account Balance, Budget, and Goal. Touch and hold the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for calmfinance. To choose which budget or goal a widget shows, touch and hold it and tap Edit Widget.
Subscription & Payments
What does Pro include?
Pro adds unlimited accounts (the free plan has up to 4 active ones), the cashflow forecast, investment tracking, iCloud sync across your devices, Scan receipt and Add from a file (the free plan includes 3 receipts and 3 file imports), and Automation, which adds transactions from Apple Pay and, on iOS 27 or later, from your bank’s notifications. Budgets, goals, widgets, voice input, and CSV import and export are free on every plan.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Open Settings > Subscription and tap Manage Subscription to go to Apple’s subscription settings, where you can cancel or change billing. After you cancel, Pro stays active until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
How do I restore a purchase?
Open Settings > Subscription and tap Restore. The app checks the App Store for purchases on your Apple Account and unlocks Pro again if it finds an active subscription or a lifetime purchase.
Data & Support
How does iCloud Sync work?
With Pro, turn it on in Settings > App > Data & Sync > Data Sync. Your accounts, categories, transactions, budgets, goals, and investments stay stored on each device and are also synced through your private iCloud database to your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. The app keeps working offline and syncs when iCloud is available. Changing the setting takes effect the next time you open the app.
How do backups work?
Backups are encrypted and stored in iCloud, separately from your synced data, so you can restore them on your other Apple devices (this needs iCloud Keychain). With Back Up Automatically on, as it is by default, a backup is made every hour while you use the app, and the 15 newest are kept. You can also keep up to 5 manual backups, made in Settings > App > Data & Sync > Backups.
What happens when I restore a backup?
All current app data is replaced with the data in the backup, and with iCloud Sync on, the restored data also syncs to your other devices. If you might want to go back, make a fresh backup first. To restore, touch and hold a backup in Settings > App > Data & Sync > Backups and choose Restore.
How do I export transactions?
Go to Settings > App > Other > Export, choose the period, accounts, and CSV columns, then export and share the file. To export one account, touch and hold it on the accounts screen and choose Export transactions.
How do I import transactions from CSV?
Go to Settings > App > Other > Import and choose a CSV file. Say whether the first row is a header, match the columns to transaction fields, choose defaults for a missing account or currency, and link the account and category names in the file to yours; names left as New become new accounts or categories. Then confirm the import. On the free plan, rows that need an investment account or more accounts than the plan allows are skipped.
Can I add transactions from a screenshot or a statement file?
Yes. Open the ellipsis menu on Transactions and choose Add from a file. It reads PDF, CSV, XLSX, and XLS statements, and screenshots from your banking app saved to Files. You review and edit every transaction found before saving. Add from a file is part of Pro, and the free plan includes 3 imports.
How do I delete app data?
Go to Settings > App > Other > Delete data. It permanently removes all your financial records, app settings including the passcode, and saved backups, which are deleted from iCloud too. With iCloud Sync on, the deletion also reaches your other devices. The app then closes and starts with the initial setup on the next launch.
